A Letter From Our Head of School

At Chippingford, we believe childhood is sacred – a season not only of preparation, but of living fully through learning, playing, wondering, and growing. Our purpose is simple: to give every child the deeply personal attention, moral foundation, and joyful community that allows them to thrive.

Chippingford is a small, highly intentional Pre-K through 6th grade program in Westwood created for families seeking a truly personalized, human-led education. While innovation and artificial intelligence hold great promise, we believe introducing these tools too early can shape—and sometimes constrain—the social and emotional development of young children. For that reason, we deliberately emphasize the human element, especially in the preschool and primary years.

Our classrooms of 6 – 8 students allow seasoned educators to know each child deeply and design learning that meets their specific academic, social, and emotional needs. Instruction is offline-first, rooted in classical virtues, and grounded in the understanding that every child is a child of God. We teach our students to pursue truth, to think critically, to act kindly, to serve humbly, to value liberty, and to be grateful.

We offer an education model carefully shaped around your family’s needs. At Chippingford we are a true partnership – between school and home, educators and parents, and among families who share a common vision for their children’s growth. One of our defining strengths is the careful curation of our parent community. When the parents of your child’s friends hold similar values, a genuine home–school partnership becomes possible – something many families describe as one of the most meaningful parts of the Chippingford experience.

Privacy, discretion, and peace of mind are foundational to how we operate. Families entrust us with what matters most, and we treat that responsibility with the care it deserves.

A distinctive part of life at Chippingford is our personalized parenting partnership. Drawing on more than 30 years spanning kindergarten through 12th grade – including service as Head of School at Carlthorp School, work as an educational consultant, and experience as director of a family foundation – I bring both professional insight and the perspective of a parent of adult children. I understand the unique challenges of raising children in Los Angeles while helping them remain grounded, kind, grateful, and respectful of their family’s spiritual and cultural traditions.

We maintain a thoughtfully selective approach to enrollment, with a primary focus on growing our preschool program and a limited number of seats available in the primary grades. We are also preparing to open an extraordinary new primary campus just minutes from our current location – one that will set a new standard in beauty, safety, and thoughtful design.

For families who travel frequently, we offer a first-of-its-kind Hybrid Enrollment option that provides the full support of a private school – curriculum, guidance for a traveling teacher, and meaningful connection to our community – while accommodating a mobile lifestyle.

Chippingford is more than a school. It is a place where children are formed – not merely taught – and where childhood is treasured, not rushed.

We look forward to beginning a personal dialogue with you. If you believe Chippingford may be the right fit for your family, we invite you to share your story with us here.

With gratitude,

Tim Kusserow

Head of School

“We have two daughters, ages 5 and 9. We explored several educational options after coming from a traditional private school, but none came close to the experience we found here. The teachers cultivate an environment where curiosity thrives and confidence grows, bringing academics to life in meaningful and inspiring ways. It’s unlike anything we’ve encountered before, and we feel genuinely fortunate to be part of this community!.”

Why Chippingford

Whole-Child Learning

Our approach nurtures every part of your child—mind, body, and spirit—through personalized learning, character education, and meaningful relationships.

Small Class Sizes, Big Impact

With a 1:6 educator-to-student ratio, each child receives the attention and support they need to thrive—academically, emotionally, and socially.

Faith-Rooted, Virtue-Focused

Chippingford offers an intentionally Christian program (rooted in Judaism) that has adopted and actively teaches the cardinal and spiritual values while fostering a culture of kindness, responsibility, and truth-seeking in everything we do.

Joyful, Purposeful Learning

We blend rich academics with creativity, outdoor play, and project-based learning to spark curiosity and build confidence.

Mission Statement

to enable young people to seek truth,
realize their potential, and
know themselves as children of God.

INTEGRATION OF BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT

Emphasis on “whole person” development that includes mental, physical, and spiritual fulfillment.

Integration rather than compartmentalization. Activities, lessons, and learnings make use of the “whole self” whenever possible.

TIMELESS VIRTUES

Our learning is premised on the idea that there are specific virtues, unique to humanity, which transcend place, time, and culture. When cultivated and embodied these virtues lead to greater success for individuals and society.

Of these virtues, we especially consider: the classic virtues (prudence, temperance, fortitude, and justice) and the supernatural virtues (faith, hope, and love.)

CHILDREN OF GOD

As children created for a divine purpose, students seek to understand God and creation in all of its forms and manifestations.

Our approach to Christianity is rooted in Judaism and informed by the thinking and writings of C.S. Lewis.

Join us as we nurture children to grow in wisdom, live with purpose, and love learning!
